Activists give representation to governor on rising atrocities against women

GANDHINAGAR: In a representation to Gujarat governor Dr Kamala, a activists' delegation, led by Ahmedabad Women's Action Group (AWAG) director Ila Pathak, expressed serious concern over the state administration's apathy towards rising cases of atrocities against women, especially rape, in Gujarat.
"It is unfortunate that senior state officials do not ensure follow-up action against the accused and their accomplices after they are put on trial," Pathak told TOI on coming out of the Raj Bhawan.
NCW seeks report on alleged rape

NEW DELHI The National Commission for Women (NCW) and the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights have sought immediate reports from the Goa administration on the alleged rape of a nine-year-old Russian girl at Arambol beach in north Goa.
NCW chairperson Girija Vyas has asked the government to send her a report on the action taken by it on the report and also advised the State to improve security on the beaches.
Amendments to the Dowry Prohibition Act 1961 in the offing

In order to provide more teeth to dowry-prevention laws, the Government has decided to make it mandatory for couples to notify the list of gifts exchanged during their wedding ceremony.
The rule will come about through an amendment to the existing Dowry Prohibition Act 1961 (DPA).
The list of gifts, in form of a sworn affidavit, has to be notarised, signed by a protection officer or a dowry prohibition officer and kept by both the parties. Failing this can invite heavy penalty including a three-year term in jail for not only bride and groom but also their parents.
Women's groups seek tougher laws against sexual assault

NEW DELHI: Following public outrage over the perceived injustice meted out in the Ruchika Girhotra molestation case, a group of women's organisations have demanded a comprehensive legislation to deal with cases of sexual assault and rape.
The organisations, including All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) and National Federation of Indian Women, suggested widening the definition of rape and molestation to bring it in conformity with international standards and ensure that there are no legal loopholes.
